The American Psychiatric Association should strongly consider including journalism in the upcoming, updated version of the Diagnostics and Statistics Manual for Mental Disorders, commonly referred to as the DSM. For me, journalism is an addiction that I haven't been been able to shake since I first encountered it as a student reporter in college.
As many people must learn to live with their addictions, I will try to do the same with my journalism affliction. However, I will get my fix in every way I can. As some of you know, I have written to all of the inmates at the Starkville City Jail for some time now. Sadly, addictions can worsen until the addict needs more and more to fill his fix.
Beginning tomorrow (Thursday), I will become the newest columnist for the Starkville Daily News. Other news organizations, The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal and the Jackson Free Press, will also run columns I write. I will also occasionally write freelance long-form journalism pieces for the JFP.
I hope you will enjoy reading them a fraction as much as I will enjoy writing them.
