Not long after New York approves gay marriage, this Starkville letter to the editor says it all about the culture divide in this nation.
For a little background, this letter responds to Starkville Daily News news editor Carl Smith's recent column [posted following Wayne Fondren's letter.] about gay marriage.
Gays Make My Skin Crawl
For those of you who want to read the offending column, keep scrolling down, like toward Satan, as in the Devil.
Same-Sex Marriage Should Be Protected
Mississippi native Carl Smith can be reached at sdnnews@bellsouth.net.
Leilani Salter, editor of the Starkville Daily News can be reached at sdneditor@bellsouth.net.
And remember to be careful today. After all, the gays and lesbians may make your skin crawl.
UPDATE:
Here's the followup column Salter published yesterday in response to Smith's column.
This Page Includes All Opinions
National challenges like the slow economic recovery, the debt ceiling crisis and our military still entrenched in wars have distracted us from this nation's real cancer: Gays and Lesbians!!!
SECOND UPDATE:
I decided to give Mr. Fondren a call to discuss his letter. I told him I found his letter very interesting and that I'm sure he received lots of response from it.
After he asked if I supported his letter, I replied politely that I didn't agree with it.
"Well, are you gay?" he asked.
He let out a sigh of relief when I informed him that I wasn't.
I ended the call by wishing him a good day.

Racist old men who make the South look like the 1850s make my skin crawl..also, carnies...
ReplyDeleteWayne Fondren is SADLY my grandfather, I know first hand that he is an old bitter homophobe racist. I laugh at his columns that he puts into the Starkville Daily News especially the ones where he uses the Bible, the last book on earth that Wayne Fondren is actually living his life by is the BIBLE. Wayne is a miserable person and he is mad that I his FIRST grandchild married outside of my race!! Wayne disowned me as well as his first born son (my father) b/c my father stood by me! Wayne said I would be NOTHING he said no one would hire me and that my child would never be accepted...10 years later I am a very successful Paralegal at a well known defense firm, I live in a nice house in Madison, MS one of the most upscale towns in MS and my beautiful mixed daughter goes to one of the top rated schools in Mississippi and has a ton of friends (she had 18 children AND their parents at her last birthday party) Needless to say my child is definitely accepted and she is liked for the sweet and beautiful soul that she is!! Wayne is old, he is ignorant and his words are not worthy of the paper they are written on! Thats my two cents, from someone who has known him for 31 yrs!!
ReplyDeleteChicrocker23,
ReplyDeleteYou sound like you've made a good life for yourself. I appreciate you having the courage to share such personal information here. I also grew up in a family rife with racism and ignorance and understand that discussing family can be tough.
Keep looking forward.
