More color in the room, God bless

She needed something to brighten the room.
After visiting with Mama for a few minutes I noticed the dead flowers and asked her about them. She informed me that she sent them to herself.
"I felt like I deserved some flowers," she said. "When they moved me in here it didn't have enough color."
The bouquet of dead flowers had a card attached in Mama's handwriting that read "God Bless."
After continuous in-patient time in five hospitals in Yazoo City, Jackson and Vicksburg, Mama showed she's a trooper. She went from an unconscious state, unable to breathe alone and later not wanting to continue living to a woman determined to leave the hospital and find her outside of an institution.
She wants color in her life now.

I took the vase and dumped the flowers in the trash. The next day I had a fresh arrangement of flowers delivered to her room. Even when I can't visit, may be she'll look at the flowers and think of me.

After spending a little time with her recently, I could tell how much she has improved based on her snippy comments about me not visiting in a while.

She has made tremendous progress in recent weeks. She can stand on her own now using a walker.
"I thought they were crazy when they first brought it in here," she said. "I surprised myself."
She said she feels like a new person. She recalls telling me in a different hospital that she no longer wanted to live and shook her head from side to side.
"Everything looks so much better now," she said. "I'll be able to go back to Wal-Mart again."
