Where now?

I haven't posted in a while since I moved to a new house last week and won't have Internet service for another week.

Mama is still in ICU at the Central Mississippi Medical Center but has recovered from her surgery with a few challenges along the way. After physicians prescribed high doses of steroids, she experienced "steroid psychosis," which affected her thinking due to the chemical reaction between her body and such high amounts of the drugs. After physicians lowered her doses of steroids, her thinking has improved tremendously.

A few minutes ago, one of her doctors called to update me on Mama's condition. He recommend she return to a long-term acute care hospital, similar to the one she was at before she needed to leave for surgery a few days before Christmas.

Specialty Select Hospital, where my mother had unfavorable experiences with before, declined to accept her back at its facility. Recently, the CEO of the hospital sent me a letter following up with my discussion with him about concerns I had with staff at the hospital. Basically, he said he used the experience as a "teaching experience."

As for where Mama will go since Specialty rejected her, another facility in Jackson, Regency Hospital, may be an option. I have learned of a place in Vicksburg and will look for a facility closer to Starkville, possibly in Tupelo.

We hope to learn more this weekend.

As always, if you have any comments, questions or advice related to this, feel free to e-mail me here.
