Mark your calendar for the Greater Starkville Development Partnership's ribbon-cutting at 11:30 a.m. on Friday at 316 Highway 12. Starkville will officially welcome Mo'Money Taxes to the community.
Curious about a company called "Mo' Money," I researched the company and found it has about 30 locations throughout Mississippi and more than 200 offices total. The company claims to have had 35,000 to 40,000 customers.
You may have read the "Starkville Daily News" feature story about the business that opened here in December but didn't mention any of the questionable activities about the company in other locations. A cursory search on Google found these headlines from Louisiana and Missouri locations:
The company's Web site isn't very helpful. After visiting the link to to www.momoneytaxes.com, you'll see that it's "no longer available until further notice."
Here's one of the news reports about the franchise, this one in St. Louis:
Many of these businesses are independently owned and operated, so Starkville's Mo' Money Taxes may be a great place for you to have taxes prepared. However, when deciding where to have your taxes prepared, research the credibility of companies.
To be fair, I was impressed with the "Mo' Community Initiative" that office manager Chibu Akukwe described to help victims of the recent fire. The company says it will donate $20 to a non-profit of a person's choice who has his or her taxes successfully prepared at the business.
While not directly associated, while mentioning this to a couple of people, they told me about the Starkville Board of Alderman's recent action to prohibit "car title for loans" businesses from opening in Starkville for a year. For those of you who haven't seen the beautiful new business on Highway 12 near Piggly Wiggly, consider yourself lucky.
Perhaps you can retrieve your car title after getting one of those 30 second tax refunds at Mo' Money.
